Why We Love Orange!

My daughter called me from college one night in a panic.  This normally reserved, reflective, somewhat quiet girl sounded anxious and I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my cell phone.  “Mom,” she said, “I know what I am going to do with the rest of my life.”  I was, as you can imagine, pretty taken back by such a huge statement, especially since she was currently a Sociology and art major with no definitive career goals.  I knew she was interested in social change, but that’s a pretty broad category.  “I’ve been looking at all of the organizations that my school’s involved with and there are so many great causes out there, but nothing has ever gotten to me like this one.”  I was expecting her to tell me that she was going to start an orphanage for aids victims in Africa, an animal shelter in tsunami ridden areas of Asia, or an art therapy program for children in hospitals.  All very worthy considerations and the types of things I’d been used to hearing from young people her age.

“I have to stop sex trafficking.”

My heart stopped and I had to pull the car over and make sure I was 100% present for this one.  “Where would you have to go?  Thailand or India?”  “No mom…I’d start in San Francisco. Other than Illegal arms and drugs, human slaves are one of the largest illegal imports to the US.”  The protective mom part of me wanted to tell her to stay as far away as possible from something so dark and scary.  But the part of me that realized she was an amazing adult now who had become just what I’d wanted her to replied, “Well, if you feel like it’s what you’re supposed to do then you have to do it.”

That call began my personal investigation into the crime of sex trafficking and I began to uncover a secret that was absolutely horrendous.  It is estimated that there are 27 million people enslaved worldwide and the worst part is that it is happening in our own backyards.

A portion of all profits from DRESS will be donated to an organization called, NOT FOR SALE.  Not for Sale is dedicated to ending human sex trafficking and they partner with other abolitionists throughout the world to rescue these victims from slavery, begin the incredibly difficult task of reintegration and restoration, and work to change laws that regulate and define and prosecute prostitution and trafficking.  When children can be sold on Craig’s List, it’s time we all start to get involved to protect them.  Thank you for your support and if you are interested in reading more or making a donation, please visit http://www.notforsalecampaign.org/

$1000.00 from the sale of the Gilbert Adrian dress will be donated to the NOT FOR SALE campaign.
