RARE Sybil Connolly
designer Pleated Linen Dress
Exceptional pleated, hand stitched handkerchief linen dress from Sybil Connolly, the most famous of Ireland’s fashion designers. Those of you who know who she is will appreciate this fine example of her work.
She was one of Jacqueline Kennedy’s favorite designers and designed the skirt she wore in one of the most famous of the official White House portraits of the first lady.
If you notice, this dress is rows an drows of pleated fabric. The specialized pleating is her signature design element and it took 9 yards of linen to make 1 yard of pleated fabric! It also took over a month to complete and when you have held one in your hands, you can see why. The details are unbelievable and even the snaps that cover the side zipper indicate the level of craftsmanship. I would describe the color as a deep berry. It is lined with bright fuchsia and bears the label, Sybil Connolly Dublin. The only thing I can find to mention is that the underarms have slight discoloration that actually shows up more in the photos than in person, and I have not tried to clean the dress. There is also very minor soiling on the inside of the collar. Other than that, it is in amazing condition. The Hunt Museum website has a wealth of information about Sybil Connolly and her contributions to fashion history. Click on the link below to read about this important designer. You would be lucky to own one of these very rare vintage dresses!
