John Bates:
JEAN VARON Vintage Dress

He called his company “Jean Varon” because he thought that a successful fashion business needed a French sounding name.  He must have known what he was talking about, because John Bates is credited with introducing many important elements of 1960’s British fashion.  His mod contributions include; the shortest of the minis, striped tube dresses, pant suits, bikini dresses, and string vest dresses.  He is perhaps best known, however, for the leather costumes he designed for Emma Peel, the character played by Diana Rigg in the 60’s television show The Avengers
This beautiful dress in the early 70’s and it is classically structured with top stitching in a heavy orange/red wool.  There are a few tiny bits that are about an eraser head size in diameter that are probably just nibbles in the wool. There are no holes, stains, odors, or any other problems. Great collectible piece.
